How To Move Your WordPress Blog To A New Server

Whilst there are an endless number of plugins and scripts out there that will allow you to do this task, knowing how to clone a wordpress blog is an important skill, as this not only allows you to be able to backup your blog when you need to, but it will also allow you to reverse the process and quickly deploy a well configured blog when the need arises. Lets go over the process as if we were using a C-Panel based hosting account…

The first step involves backing up the physical files that your blog consists of. To do this, you can simply drag and drop these files from any ordinary FTP program, however using C-Panel, this is as simple as entering the file manager, selecting all files, and compressing them into a ZIP file. In fact, this is the preferred method, as it retains all file permissions, plus it makes downloading and uploading a much faster process. Once you have zipped up your files, download them to a local directory.

Next step involves backing up your database files. In order to know which database to backup, I highly recommend verifying this by opening your WP-config file, and checking the database name. However, in order to back the database, this can be done using phpMYadmin within your C-Panel account. This should be done by selecting the database, then clicking the Export button. As a preference, I generally download it as a.sql file, and keep it local with my website files backup.

There are other backup solutions available that will do this whole process automatically as well - personally, I use an automatic backup plugin that schedules backups to occur once a week and stores them in a secure location off site, however, this can be a very preferential decision. Many people don't like using plugins for backups, and prefer to go down the manual route. Some see these plugins as a gateway for hackers, which is total understandable, however if you have stable hosting, and rock solid server security, this should not be a huge concern for you.

At the end of the day, knowing how to clone a wordpress blog is just as important a skill as creating the blog itself. As a victim of lost websites without having a backup to rely on, I can reassure you that there has never been a bigger need to be able to run backups of your blog. Ensure that above all else, you chose a method that works best for you, in a way that you need it to work. If you are time limited, then an automatic solution might be handy for you, that said, if you have a little time to spare, then maybe doing it manually might be the right thing for you.
